He is an artist who moves within the meaning of a
clear, colourful form and its operational extension
in a world seeking his identity.
“In general,Achilleas Christou’s work is an expres-
sion of a continuous search for the colour-figura-
tive surfaces of a canvas that encompass mental
and spiritual quests seeking to find a way out into
the light. In interpreting the phenomenon of the
struggle between quality and quantity, this artist
proposes quality.”
Gallery Kypriaki Gonia:
Aresult of the deep love for art
By Dr Tonia Loizou - Art Critic
The owner of Gallery Kypriaki Gonia, Nikos
Psatharis, who studies the Popular Art and is an
artist himself, organised his “space” which, at the
beginning, was on K. Kalogera Street in order to
exhibit his traditional pieces of art and to give the
public a chance to become acquainted with Tradi-
tional Art.
Later, he gave other artists the opportunity to ex-
hibit and for this reason an old traditional house
was transformed into a gallery to serve this pur-
pose. The current gallery is on 45 Stadiou Street
near the old G.S.Z. Stadium with the ancient
church of St. Lazarus in very close proximity,
in a neighbourhood where there are many man-
sions that act as a reminder of the old beauty of
Larnaca. This stone house, lovingly cared for by
Nikos Psatharis, preserves the traditional arches,
the high roof and the big windows. The space is
discreetly adorned with the artist’s creations that
add to the house’s traditional beauty. Since the
opening of the gallery in January 1993, under the
name Kypriaki Gonia, many remarkable artists
have been hosted.
What is the role of the gallery? It is the link between
the creator and the public, and gives the people of
Cyprus the chance to become acquainted with the
artists, bringing a cultural breeze to the town. The
gallery’s attitude of facing the artists with respect
and responsibility and keeping away from any kind
of commercialisation, accomplishes its goal.
