LeeWen (Singapore)
Lee Wen was born in Singapore, where he also
lives and works. He is a multidisciplinary artist and
one of Singapore’s most internationally recognised
contemporary artists and organiser of art events in
Singapore. He has been exploring different strate-
gies of time-based and performance art since 1989.
Best known for his
Yellow Man
series of work, the
multidisciplinary artist is also one of Singapore’s
pioneering performance artists. Through construct-
ed personas the artist plays provocateur, motivated
by a strong conviction of justice and idealism, with
a persistence to stay true to the self in an unsympa-
thetically structured world. Lee often uses his life
experiences and personal dilemmas as initial en-
tries into an artistic journey, recovering memories
and remakingmythologies.Acontributing factor in
TheArtists Village alternative in Singapore and the
Black Market international performance art collec-
tive, Lee has helped initiate and organise events
in order to platform, support and develop perfor-
mance art practices, discourse, infrastructure and
audiences in Singapore.
Ray Langenbach (USA/Malaysia/Finland)
