In her address, which was read out by
archaeological officer of the Department of
Antiquities Dr Anna Satraki, the director of
the Department of Antiquities Dr Marina
Solomidou-Ieronymidou
highlighted
the
scientific and multi-faceted importance of the
work of the AAP. Among others, she said:
“Combiningsurface researchwith topographical
recordings, geophysical surveying and of
course excavations, professor Toumazou’s
team has served for more than two decades
as a comprehensive archaeological field and
research school. Throughout the years, it has
reared generations of young archaeologists,
Americans, Europeans and Cypriots, who
have since taken up important positions in
universities and bodies abroad, and promoted
Cypriot archaeology in the world scientific
community. In parallel, it served as a model
historical research workshop as it combined
other sciences in its multi-level work, such
as the sciences of anthropology, literature,
chemistry, architecture and restoration.”
Dr Toumazou expressed his gratitude to all the
bodies and individuals who have supported the
AAP in various ways over the past 25 years.
Among others, he thanked Davidson College
and the National Science Foundation, the
Cyprus Department of Antiquities, Athienou
Municipality, CAARI (Cyprus American
Archaeological Research Institute), the Larnaca
District Museum, the Cyprus Museum, the
deputy heads of the AAP Dr Nicos Kardoulias
and Dr Derek B. Counts, the assistant directors
Dr Erin Walcek Averett, Dr Clay M. Cofer and
Dr Jody M. Gordon as well as all the members
of the AAP, the companies APS Athienites Ltd,
