archaeologists of Malloura”, featuring as the
‘cast’ the archaeologists who took part in the
project in 2013, produced by the Kallinikion
Municipal Museum of Athienou. The film
shows one day in the life of the archaeologists
during the excavations in Malloura, and
the subsequent work that followed at the
archaeological lab, which is housed in the
Town Hall.
The evening closed with a reception in the open
air areas of the Town Hall where participants
thanked Dr Toumazou in person for his role as
an advocate of the history and archaeology of
the country, and also for the opportunity the
AAP provides to build ties between people
from Cyprus, the US and elsewhere. It is the
hope of all that the Athienou Archaeological
Mission and Dr Toumazou will continue their
work on the Malloura archaeological site, for
many years to come.

On the morning of 6 July 2015, the
archaeologists’ children took part in a treasure
hunt for objects similar to those exhibited in the
three collections of the Kallinikion Municipal
Museum. At the end of the event, they made
their own works of art, which enriched the
temporary exhibition of children’s art at the
Museum.
During a two hour sightseeing tour carried
out by Dr Toumazou at the Malloura site, and
specifically the sanctuary, which dates back
from the Late Geometric to the Roman era
and the tombs, of the Archaic-Roman age,
participants had the opportunity to acquire
a wealth of knowledge about the site and its
history, to hear exciting accounts from the
members of the AAP about their experience
and about cases of looting of archaeological
treasures. Dr Toumazou answered many
questions from participants, the posing of
which reflected their great interest.
The Thread of Time starts 10,000 years
ago. People in this place were processing
the stone and manufactured agricultural
tools to ensure their food.
Seven thousand years later, the population
of this place lived and developed in
settlements. They produced pottery and
processed copper, materials associated
with the worship to the gods.
The city of Golgoi thrived and became
known throughout the island for the
worship of the goddess of beauty,
Aphrodite Golgias. In Malloura, male
deities were worshiped and limestone
statues were dedicated to them.
The birth of Christ is changing the history
by dividing the years before and after His
birth. Saints Paul and Barnabas founded
the Christian Church on the island.
The whole island was plagued by
earthquakes and Arab invasions during
the Byzantine period. Tradition says

the top, on the hunt of a Saracen.
Franks, Venetians, Turks, British. They
thought that the people of this island
easily forget identity and religion. The
people though abandoned nothing. They
erupted.
