G
allery Gloria has hosted a new exhibition
by architect Zenon Sierepeklis from 18
December 2015 until 7 January 2016. The
exhibition constitutes a new form of expression
by an artist who has accustomed us to expect
something different with his every venture.
So far, beyond his acclaimed and award-winning
architectural work, Zenon Sierepeklis has
presented excellent artistic photographs. And,
more recently, he moved us with his sculptures in
his book entitled
Ekkremotites
(Pending Issues).
His new work, which moves between painting
and engraving – or if you prefer between sculpture
and sketching – is colourful and erotic. The wood
paintings on display, where the line replaces the
deep, distinct carving of Zenon’s chisel, once
again revealed the delicate yet humorous way he
has of dealing with any issue thrown his way.
In terms of content, there are three sections.
The theme of the first section is the nude, and is
dominated by references to Amedeo Modigliani,
Brandt, Henri Matisse and our own Paul Georgiou
and Christoforos Savva.
The second section reveals the charm of children’s
drawings or, better still, refers to the child that we
all, to a greater or lesser extent, have in us.
The third section is more like a “non- section”;
the erratic images express the collective artistic
memory of Zenon Sierepeklis, something which
was already demonstrated in his photographic and
architectural work. “Erratic’’ should not be seen
as a disadvantage. On the contrary; it is Zenon’s
truth and strength and matches his exuberant
personality. It is his passion for life, for adventure
and the discovery of new places. His almost
foolhardy character, marked with an experiential
course during which he did not avoid risk, but on
most occasions sought it out.
Yet, despite this, Sierepeklis “stays put.”
Wherever his uneasy and creative spirit takes
him, he will not forget to take with him the same
foundations, irrespective of the forms and shapes,
the materials and the colours. What makes his art
direct and moving is his attachment to quality, to
artistic methods, to light, to truth, to simplicity
and the descriptiveness of life. This is why one
distinguishes in his new exhibition the same
asymmetrical obsessions, which in the end make
it impossible to categorise him.
