Congress on Censorship
T
he Cultural Services of the Ministry of
Education and Culture, in cooperation
with the University of Cyprus’ Department
of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies,
organised a Scientific Congress on
Controlling
Ideas and Censorship from the beginnings of
Greek typography to the Constitution of 1844.
The Congress took place at the Bank of Cyprus
Cultural Foundation, 18-20 November 2015.
The Congress focused on two pillars: the
first looked at how ideas were controlled and
censored in the Hellenic pre-industrial form
from the 15
th
century up until 1844, and covered
the entire Greek-speaking world and the
Diaspora. The second pillar was more Cyprus-
specific, examining idea-control and censorship
from the beginning of Cypriot typography, in
1878, up until more modern times.
The Congress was joined by 26 scientists
from universities and research foundations in
Cyprus, Greece, France and Germany.
An exhibition of incunabula ran in parallel with
the Congress, with exhibits from the collections
of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and
the University of Cyprus Library. Entrance was
free.
