The Onisilos Honorary Distinction
T
he Onisilos honorary distinction, which includes
a medal and an honorary diploma, is awarded
annually by the Ministry of Education and Culture to
Cypriot scholars for their work in literature.
For 2012, the Onisilos Distinction was presented
to the Stasinos Association of Greek Philologists
of Cyprus for its valuable contribution to the cul-
tivation of Greek classical studies. The distinction
was conferred during a ceremony held to celebrate
the Association’s 50-year-anniversary on 13 De-
cember, 2012.
Through a number of publications, such as the As-
sociation’s regular bulletin, conferences’ minutes
and scientific dissertations, the Stasinos Associa-
tion is known for its multifarious actions in the field
of literature. Within this scope and aiming to boost
students’ interest in literature, the Association has
established the
Stasinos Award,
granted to Nicosia
lyceum students who excel in their studies.
Stasinos Association’s twinning with the Greek
Philological Society is a landmark in its 50-year
history and pertains to the efforts to further ad-
vance its intellectual, scientific and educational
goals. At the same time, both the establishment
of a systematic cooperation with the Department
of Classics and Philosophy, University of Cyprus,
along with its longstanding collaboration with the
University of Athens’ School of Philosophy for
holding annual seminars on ancient Cypriot litera-
ture, have significantly helped the Association in
its philological research.
