“Cypriot Symphony of 2012” (Romania)

),
was enriched in the beginning of December with
a new volume dedicated to Cyprus literature. The
work entitled
Cypriot Symphony of 2012,
is an
assorted selection of work collected by 36 poets
who were born between the beginning of the 20
th
century and the early 1960s.
Cypriot Symphony
of 2012
is the first bilingual anthology of Cypriot
poetry circulated in Romanian since 1959, when
Cypriot literature was initially introduced to the
Romanian public.
The collection, with its arrangement and
presentation, reflects the patterns and trends that
prevail in the Cypriot poetry. Some of the poems
stand independently, others are
thematically
related to important events in the island’s history,
and further still are poetic compositions based on
humanitarian matters.
The unique anthology brought together not only
poets but literary aficionados within its pages.
Compiled by Elena Lazar, author of
Panorama
of Cypriot Literature
(Bucharest, 1999), the
work is translated by Elena Lazar and Jana
Balacciu Matei, who have both received awards
for their success in poetry translations. The
publication’s prologue is written by poet Mina
Savvidou Theodoulou, in which she presents
the central coordinates of Cypriot poetry, a brief
chronology from ancient times until today, and
rich biographies of the compilation’s poets.
The publication is circulated with the support
of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of
Education and Culture.
