Lefkosia Loop Festival
I
ndependent record company Louvana Re-
cords presented the 2
nd
Lefkosia Loop Festi-
val. The festival took place, as last year, at the
Melina Merkouri Hall (Famagusta Gate) on
5 and 6 January 2013.
The participating musicians and bands followed
a variety of musical orientations and approaches,
adding to the anticipated diversity of the shows.
This year’s festival hosted the Greek artist
Yiorgos Kaloudis, a cellist who performed
pieces from his two personal albums, as
well as the brilliant double bassist and com-
poser Michalis Siganidis, in the debut perfor-
mance of his
doc-fic-o,
a solo set which he
presented using tape, double bass, guitar and
vocals. The festival also hosted, for the sec-
ond time, the popular two-man band
Sancho
003
(Fotis Siotas and Kostas Pantelis), pre-
senting pieces from their excellent second al-
bum called
Muzga
.
Joining the festival from London was Mo Ko-
lours who circulated his first EP,
Drum Talking
,
in May 2011. The festival wouldn’t be complete
without the Cypriot acts
Plain History
,
Acapella
Solo Loop
and
M.Edo
, all three of which are
brand new artists, as well as Giannis Koutis who
presented his
Stand Alone Project
. Raissa An-
geli was the live action painter, accompanying
some of the acts in real time. Angeli additionally
presented with Sofronis Sofroniou, an audio-
visual installation called
Robot
. Also participat-
ing were the bands Arampas, which presented an
audio-visual project, Leontios Toumbouris, and
Lito Kattou who presented a video.
Live Looping
Live looping is a technique that gives the art-
ist the ability to build, in real time, a complex,
multi-layered musical piece. This is achieved
by creating melodic and rhythmic phrases with
natural or electronic instruments that, once struc-
tured, are repeated as recorded samples to which
the artist continues to add new lines. More than
often, the final result is a completed musical
piece. Live looping enables the artist to dem-
onstrate to his/her audience, how a song can be
built on the spot, and what its major components
are, while the listener gets a sense of being a part
of the creative process.
