he late Pefkios Georgiades, former Minister
of Education and Culture and a man who was
loved like few others, was honoured in a concert
held by the Strings Workshop – Musical Talent De-
velopment Program of the Ministry of Education
and Culture on 12 January 2013. The concert, which
was held at the StrovolosMunicipal Theatre, was or-
ganised inmemory of PefkiosGeorgiades, under the
auspices of the President of the Republic, Mr Dem-
etris Christofias. All proceeds went to the Patient
Welfare Committee of the Archbishop Makarios III
Hospital in Nicosia, which supports the families of
children who are forced to seek treatment abroad.
Pefkios Georgiades: the man who left his mark
on Cyprus’ educational system and people’s
hearts
It has been six years since former Education Min-
ister Pefkios Georgiades passed away, yet the Re-
public of Cyprus still feels the need to pay tribute to
the man who left his mark on Cyprus’ educational
system and in people’s hearts.
The late Pefkios Georgiades was born in Nicosia in
1935. He graduated from the Pancyprian Gymna-
sium in Nicosia. He studiedArchitecture at the Uni-
versity of Sheffield and continued with post-gradu-
ate studies in Rotterdam. In 1996, he was awarded
the honorary title of PhD by Oxford Brookes Uni-
versity.
Alifelong contribution to Cyprus’civil service
He worked in the public service from 1959 until
1972, first as an architect for the Road Transport
Department and then as the head of the Ministry of
Education and Culture’s Technical Services.
