Dr Criton Tomazos writes in the official cata-
logue:
As an accomplished artist of great cali-
bre and talent, Chris moves comfortably and
assuredly from the vibrant, evocative and vivid
landscapes of his native Cyprus and England
his adopted country, through to the extraor-
dinary visionary abstract paintings emerging
almost daily in his studio…It is very notice-
able that every period of artistic production is
usually marked by a particular style or school
of thought. Each one is fully and passionately
explored over many works and links unmistak-
ably and organically to the next – so that one
gets a sense of continuity through each stage of
his career...”
About the exhibition
This brilliant exhibition by Chris Savvides took
place from 5-10 November, 2012, in a prestig-
ious location in the heart of London’s art scene,
Cork Street, at the
Gallery in Cork Street
. It
was sponsored by the International Company
of James Hambro & Partners LLP.
The artist presented 44 works, all oils on large
canvases, representing paintings produced
from 1991 to 2012. All the exhibits are abstract
works and are in groups or series, comprising
variations on chosen themes, masterfully ex-
ecuted.
Axiom
– The inspiration for this series came
while the artist was studying the surface of a
pond, looking at it through the hanging branch-
es of a willow tree. The fragmentation of the
surface by the swinging branches created a pic-
ture with various asymmetrical planes.
Mardi Gras
– Is a development from the Ax-
iom series Mardi Gras 1 & 2 and is inspired
by the festive moods of Notting Hill Carnival.
The music, the colours, the floats, the costumes
and the shop window displays all generated a
plethora of ideas.
Alegria
– This series explores the relationship
between shapes and lines creating tension, ex-
plosive emotions and magnetic forces. Chris
states: “For this series of paintings I wanted to
use the power of lines, circles and semi circles,
movement, shapes floating in space or cata-
pulted on to the surface of the canvas. Some
shapes are on a constant journey through space
and others inert, creating a placid and serene
sensation.”
Pente Plus One
– It suggests an imaginary
sculpture, floating and travelling in an endless
space. This sequence is depicted in five stages
across five canvases. During the journey addi-
tional panels and rods have been employed plus
a bubble which crowns the image of the fourth
stage. In the final stage the bubble engulfs all
panels and rods, which have collapsed within it.
