Elena Toumazi-Rembelina:
Erhou (Come)
Poems in the
Erhou
(Come)
collection are
characterised by a deli-
cate poetic breath and
originate from experi-
ential depositions, with
folds of memory includ-
ed in the mix – mainly
connected to love lost.
They are mainly con-
centric poems, with
signs of hurt suffered by a hypersensitive per-
son. Despite being overemotional at times, Elena
Toumazi-Rembelina’s poetry is balanced out by
her noble use of words, cultivated tongue and soft
touch.

Andreas Karayian:
Immoral Stories: London-Al-
exandria
Immoral Stories: Lon-
don-Alexandria
narrates
the personal life of the
author, in this autobi-
ography come novel.
By putting together
snapshots, without the
conventional explana-
tory coherence, Andreas
Karayian succeeds in re-
constructing the attractions and repulsions of his
body and soul, with a visual vibrancy and literary
sensitivity. His honesty is at times disarming. The
author strips himself bare in a way, self-healing by
constantly moving from life to art. The author re-
lays his life story using poetic fiction, successfully
projecting the drama faced by people who were
transformed into tragic figures through peculiar
circumstances. And all this is presented lightly,
with a mature writing style and special literary
claims, with a sense of humour and self-sarcasm,
but also a wealth of inter-textual references,
which prove the author’s high level of education
and cultivation.

Nicos Orphanides:
The night-rider: Narrative and
other moments
With his book
The
night-rider: Narrative
and other moments
,
Nicos Orphanides com-
piles an experiential an-
thology, either of a nos-
talgic or martyred life,
which moves ahead in
time either gradually or
with the use of the bous-
trophedon technique.
Feelings that havebeenhiddendeep inside theauthor
for years come to the surface and are characterised
by an underlying – almost nuclear – internal need.
Narrative moments are structured upon memories
of events that comprise a soul, a conscience that is
fed through the wealth of its reserves. It is indeed
remarkable theway inwhich individualmoments tie
together to create rhythmic nodes of a life that carries
the stigmas of history. The sorrow of Hellenism, in
its national and theological dimension, is infusible
through this work, as it is intertwined with the mod-
ern Cypriot tragedy –mainly centred on the author’s
birthplace Kythrea – but also the diachronic com-
memoration of the Greek martyrdom. And all this is
relayed in a contemporary way of writing, which es-
capes the traditional figural conventions of narration
and facilitates expression of poetic and momentary
expression.
