Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty Exhibition

yprus was the centre of attention in an exhi-
bition dedicated to
Aphrodite, the Goddess
of Love and Beauty
, in Bratislava, Slovakia, on 31
October 2012. Works by two renowned Cypriot
artists, Nitsa Hadjigeorgiou and George Kotsonis,
were on exhibit alongside works by 35 well known
artists from Slovakia. The exhibition also included
a collection of metal sheets carved into the shape
ofAphrodite of Soli by secondary education pupils
from Cyprus.
The exhibition was organised by the
Embassy of
the Republic of Cyprus in Bratislava with the co-
operation of the Society of Free Visual Artists to
Slovak Union of Visual Arts, the Slovak Radio
and Television and the Friendship Association
between Slovakia and Cyprus, “FILIA”. The
event was supported by the Cyprus Chamber of
Fine Arts (E.KA.TE). Speaking at the launch,
the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to
Slovakia, Marios Kountourides, discussed the
role of Aphrodite in Greek mythology, which
has inspired and influenced so much art, from
ancient times through the present day.
This wasn’t the only exhibition held in Bratislava
in which the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of
the European Union in the second half of 2012
played a pivotal role.
Cyprus was also the guest of honour at “Sculpture
and Object XVII”, which was held from 28 June
until 26 August 2012. Over 120 artists from 20
countries participated in the event. “Sculpture and
Object” is considered Slovakia’s biggest sculpture
exhibition – it showcases a broad range of sculpt-
ing and creative styles.
Nine Cypriot artists took part in promoting
Cypriot contemporary art under the title, “Cy-
