T
his year’s highly anticipated
International
Short Film Festival of Cyprus
opened on 13
October with a diverse programme of short films
from Cyprus and across the globe. Co-organised
by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Educa-
tion and Culture and the Rialto Theatre, and under
the auspices of the Mayor of Limassol, Andreas
Christou, for the past two years the festival has
screened and presented awards to young and es-
tablished filmmakers. As it did last year, the festi-
val showcased 66 films, including fiction, docu-
mentaries, experimental films and animation.
Some of these films have already won awards
and distinctions in important film festivals such
as Berlin, Cannes, Oberhausen and Rotterdam.
The festival was an extraordinary event full of
inspiring cinematic moments. All films were
screened with Greek and/or English subtitles. The
festival concluded on 20 October with the awards
ceremony.
This is the second consecutive year the festival has
been upgraded to an international event, having al-
ready established itself through five successful bi-
annual festivals exhibiting Cypriot films in com-
petition. The festival celebrates the short film as
a special genre of cinematic creation and expres-
sion, offering its audiences a unique opportunity to
enjoy some of the best local and international short
filmproductions. It is fast becoming a platform for
inspiring short cinematic experiences and for cre-
ating dialogue with directors and film profession-
als from Cyprus and abroad.
