n a ceremony on 11 July 2011 at the House
of Lords in London, the S.T.A.R. Foundation
awarded a medal and a certificate to Cypriot so-
prano Julietta Demetriades for her achievements
in classical singing. The S.T.A.R. Foundation (So-
ciable, Trustworthy and Responsible) honours art-
ists who have excelled in their art and offered their
services to charity.
In addition to Ms. Demetriades, this year’s nomi-
nees included ballerina Doreen Marchioness of
Londonderry, singer Patti Boulaye of London’s
West End, and Oleksandra Jennings, state violin-
ist of Ukraine. The ceremony was hosted by the
Foundation’s Patron, Lord Tarsem, King of West
Bromwich; the medals were awarded by Prince
Shwebomin of Burma. The Foundation’s presi-
dent is the distinguished Cypriot philosopher,
pedagogue and writer, Dr Joy Philippou.
Julietta Demetriades
Julietta Demetriades began her musical studies
with Pitsa Spyridaki (piano) and Elli Korai-Yerole-
mou (vocals) at the Hellenic School of Music in
her native Lefkosia. With scholarships from the
Royal Schools of Music of the United Kingdom
and the Leventis Foundation, she left Cyprus to
study at the Royal Academy of Music in London
and at the University of London. She holds a first
Degree and Master in Performance and a Diploma
in Opera Performance Studies. 
Ms. Demetriades has performed widely in Eng-
land, France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic,
Finland, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. She recently
made her debut at the Konzerthaus in Berlin and
at the Gasteig in Munich. Other venues where she
has performed include the Cadogan Hall, St John’s
Smith Square, the Hellenic Centre in London, the
Athens Megaron, the Senate in Prague, the Cairo
Opera House and the Helsinki Cathedral. She has
also collaborated with many national orchestras,
including the Cairo Symphony, the Lublin Phil-
harmonic and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.
She has performed with various opera organisa-
tions, most recently with the Prague State Opera
and the London Lyric Opera.
Ms. Demetriades has broadcast for Cyprus Radio
and Television, Television France, Egypt Televi-
sion, Classic FM, Czech Radio, Spain Radio and
Radio Israel.
Her repertoire includes major operatic roles and
oratorios, as well as lieder and songs from all over
the world. She also has a keen interest in contem-
porary classical music, and she has performed
world premières of some of these works at con-
certs and festivals worldwide. In 2007 she was a
finalist in the Nizzissima “Voce del Mediterraneo”
Folksong Radio Competition.
Ms. Demetriades’s immediate future engagements
include concerts in the United Kingdom, Ger-
many, India and Canada, as well as her upcoming
performance as Donna Elvira in the Cyprus Opera
production of
Don Giovanni
