A
different “pop opera” for children had
its world premiere in Cyprus, on 12
September 2015. I, the Prince, directed by Vasilis
Myrianthopoulos, was brought to the stage by the
Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC).
The play can be interpreted by children in
different ways depending on their age group,
but it all boils down to the same thing: the
power of the fairy tale. And the biggest fairy
tale of all? Life itself, of course…
The storyline of this opera focuses on the
magical world of fairy tales, where even
though he is revered as the knight in shining
armour, the Prince always appears in the last
scene, missing out on all the action, the beauty
and colour. He never has a name or a storyline,
and as soon as he shows up, the story ends. He
tries to share his problems with Snow White,
Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, but they do
not want to help him. Deflated, he decides to
abandon the world of fairy tales and, having
nowhere else to go, he enters the real world. He
meets Joanna, a nice, everyday girl, and falls in
love with her. However, life becomes difficult
for him in the real world as he is different and
the real world cannot accept him. The people
in his old life trick him into returning so that
they can exploit him, while Joanna decides to
go after her Prince. His adventures continue up
