Aportrait of David Hare
Born on 5 June, 1947 in Sussex, England, David
Hare was educated at Lancing College, Sussex. He
went on to earn an MA in English from Jesus Col-
lege, Cambridge, in 1968.
After graduating, he co-founded the Portable Thea-
tre Company – a travelling theatre group – in 1968
with Tony Bicât. The theatre played a defining role
in the unconventional theatrical trend of the era.
Hare composed his first works for the Portable
Theatre, and was the theatre’s director from 1968
until 1971.
In 1974, he co-founded the Joint Stock Theatre
Company with Max Stafford-Clark and David
Aukin. He was the Company’s director from 1975
until 1980. Joint Stock Theatre Company was a
pioneering theatrical team, which saw actors and
writers work collectively to create theatrical texts
through workshops. The team was characterised
by its social and political concern, as well as bold
experimentation, both with form and theme.
Hare also served as a resident dramatist for the
Royal Court Theatre in London from 1970 until
1971, and for the Nottingham Playhouse in 1973,
while he has been a permanent contributor for the
National Theatre since 1984.
For his first major play, entitled
Slag
(1970), he re-
ceived the Evening Standard DramaAward.

liamHinton),
