Classical guitar recital with Marcus Vinicius
26 October, The Shoe Factory, Nicosia
“…besides his virtuosity, Marcos Vinicius lets
us listen to the poetic sounds hidden in the
strings of this wonderful instrument
” Riccardo
Chailly – Director of the Royal Concertge-
bouw, Amsterdam
Marcos Vinicius commenced his concert career
at the age of 14 – since then he has played in
the most prestigious Brazilian and European
cultural centres. The story of his first encounter
with the guitar, when he was eight years-old, is
a singular anecdote:
…Coming back from school, I always walked
along the same way to go home…One day,
as my mother didn’t see me at home at the
usual time and worried about my being late,
which was unusual, she came and looked for
me, walking along my way, and suddenly she
saw me, still in front of a shop window where
there was a guitar hung on the wall (I remem-
ber it as if it had happened today)…The own-
er of the shop, seeing my mother coming, told
her that I was there. My eyes had been fixed
on that instrument for more than an hour.
The owner added: ‘it is as if he had discov-
ered something very precious for him.’ For-
tunately, at that moment, my mother realised
the force of that attraction for me and, though
with difficulty, she bought me my first guitar.
I still thank her, because she understood that
by that present she allowed me to walk along
this difficult but fantastic way.
Vinicius was only 16 years old when he received
an Honorary Diploma from the Cultural Depart-
ment of Congonhas, a Brazilian city protected
by UNESCO as a World Historical Heritage site.
In 1984 he won, by unanimous vote, the pres-
tigious National Villa-Lobos Musical Contest; in
1987 Vinicius distinguished himself as the best
guitarist in Master Classes held by Oscar Ghiglia
and received the Diploma of Merit from the Chi-
giana Musical Academy of Siena. After graduat-
ing with the title of Teacher of Classical Guitar
in the Superior Chair at the State University of
Brazil, he continues to be invited as a visiting
professor and concert performer to Brazil’s most
important music conservatories, the Recife Mu-
sic Conservatory and the Music High School of
the Minas Gerais Federal University.
He has performed as a soloist with prestigious
orchestras, including the Milan Ensemble, the
Pernambuco Symphony Orchestra and the Mi-
nas Gerais’ Symphony Orchestra. In 1992 he
won the Soloist of the Year title for his perform-
ance in the famous
Concierto de Aranjuez
with
the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra.
Besides his intensive concert activity, Marcos
Vinicius attends to important transcriptions and
revisions of works for classical guitar from Ed-
izioni Carrara (Bergamo), which has also given
him the direction of the
Marcos Vinicius Gui-
tar Collection
– a collection that brings to light
a repertoire for the guitar, one that is always
new and rich with as yet unexplored treasures.
Vinicius’s original works for classical guitar
are published by Sonitus and Preludio Editions
(Italy) and Periferia Sheet Music (Spain).
Thanks to his profound knowledge of classi-
cal guitar repertoire, Marcos Vinicius is often
